Described by none other than Sir Ian McKellen as “uproariously funny”, the HandleBards present Shakespeare’s plays as you’ve never seen them before – fast-paced, irreverent and bicycle-powered.
Ride on with us through all the countryside,
With comedies and tragedies of old;
Four actors upon bikes are wont to ride,
To play the greatest stories ever told.
Since 2013, the HandleBards have pedalled over 5000 miles across the world, carrying all their set, props and costumes on just four bicycles. Following last year’s visit, the all-female cast return to perform their side-splitting production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It. Expect a “gloriously eccentric and very, very funny” (The Stage, on A Midsummer Night’s Dream) night, delivered on eight very sore legs.
And what’s the play about? Well – Rosalind and Orlando have been forced into exile in the Forest of Arden. As lovers, they become entangled in a bizarre game of lust, love and mistaken identity.
In usual HandleBards style, expect riotous amounts of energy, a fair old whack of chaos, and a great deal of laughter.
Doors open at 6.30pm when local Folk Choir Shepherd’s Crook will be performing – expect local songs, comic songs, and plenty of sheep songs!
